Cold repair offshore: assessing Belzona and composite repair options

Cold repair describes repair approaches that avoid conventional welding at the repair location; it is not a guarantee that a repair is suitable or safe. Polymer repair materials, protective coatings and engineered composite systems have different functions. The decision begins with the defect and operating conditions, not a brand name.

Section 01Separate sealing, protection and structural repair

A coating intended for chemical or corrosion protection is not automatically a pressure-retaining or load-restoring repair. Similarly, a filler used to rebuild a surface is not necessarily a qualified composite system. Define exactly what the proposed repair must achieve.

Belzona is a manufacturer with multiple product families, not a single repair specification. Product technical data, compatibility information and the engineered repair design must match the substrate, fluid, temperature, pressure and defect. No particular product is prescribed in this guide.

Section 02Assess the defect and remaining integrity

Determine whether the damage involves wall loss, through-wall leakage, cracking, erosion or another mechanism. Establish the extent, affected material and potential for continued deterioration. An engineered repair may require information beyond the accessible surface.

ISO 24817 addresses qualification, design, installation, testing and integrity management of external composite repairs within its scope. It does not make every adhesive, coating or hand-applied patch compliant. Confirm the contract edition and whether the proposed system and application are covered.

Section 03Treat execution as controlled maintenance

Avoiding welding does not remove hazards from pressure, hazardous fluids, stored energy, confined spaces or work at height. Isolation, depressurisation, access and return-to-service decisions belong to the authorised asset procedures and responsible engineers.

Do not attempt a live leak repair on the strength of an online article. Surface preparation, environmental conditions, installation controls and cure requirements must come from the qualified system and approved method statement. Changes on site require review rather than improvised substitution.

Section 04Record experience without overstating approval

My documented FPSO work includes leading a Belzona cold-repair team for seawater cooling pipe leaks and work involving carbon steel, FRP and Belzona on CIP tank reinforcement. Those are specific field-execution scopes, not a claim that all cold repairs are permanent or that I certify a manufacturer’s repair system.

For Namibia-based marine and offshore enquiries, useful inputs include inspection records, dimensions, service data and the owner’s repair requirements. Product-specific design support, class involvement and competent installers may be needed alongside the engineering survey.

Section 05Specify the repair life and follow-up

Temporary versus longer-term service must be stated and justified. The handover should record materials, installation checks, inspection requirements and operating restrictions. A repaired leak is not evidence that the wider corrosion mechanism has been controlled.

  • Verified defect description and repair purpose.
  • Qualified design and application records.
  • Approved isolation and return-to-service plan.
  • Inspection interval, limits and replacement strategy.
